Volunteer Befriender

Volunteer Title: Volunteer Befriender – Female

Description of the Volunteer Role: Womankind is an established charity that is run by women for women. We help hundreds of women every year to improve their mental health and wellbeing so they can experience a better quality of life.

About our Befriending Service – our aim is to help isolated women get back on their feet. Our befrienders encourage and support women to become more confident and independent by helping them to make decisions, build relationships and get involved in their local community. The women we support may have faced difficulties such as childhood abuse, trauma, sexual and domestic abuse and will be experiencing mental health issues and social isolation.

What befrienders do – you will support women in Bristol and South Gloucestershire for 2-3 hours on a weekly or fortnightly basis for up to a year. You will provide companionship and enable women to set their own goals and make positive changes. You would start by getting to know each other, getting out and about. As the relationship develops you will support and empower her to make changes and develop her confidence in doing everyday things such as getting the bus, joining a class, finding new hobbies, volunteering, meeting new people and having some fun! You will also be someone she can talk to who will listen.

Because of the nature of the role it is only open to women applicants and is exempt under Schedule 9 Part 1 Equalities Act 2010.
