Grants are available to support academic institutions, civil society groups, trade and industry associations and organisations to independently research privacy and data protection issues and develop privacy enhancing solutions.

Grants of between £20,000 and £100,000 are available.

An estimated budget of £250,000 will be available each year (subject to an annual review). Additional funds may be made available in exceptional circumstances where existing demand and budget allow.

The Information Commissioner’s Office Grants Programme is provided and administered by the Information Commissioners Office (ICO) and is likely to be offered on an annual basis for the remaining four years of the Information Commissioner’s, Elizabeth Denham’s, tenure (until 2021).

The aim of the fund is to provide grants which will give practical research and policy a stronger voice in the evolution of Information Rights and help to achieve the five strategic goals of the Information Rights Strategic Plan 2017-2021, which are to:

  • Increase the public’s trust and confidence in how data is used and made available.
  • Improve standards of information rights practice through clear, inspiring and targeted engagement and influence.
  • Maintain and develop influence within the global information rights regulatory community.
  • Stay relevant, provide excellent public service and keep abreast of evolving technology.
  • Enforce the laws which the ICO help shape and oversee.
