South Gloucestershire Equality Disability Network are seeking a volunteer to help us with an event we are planning in conjunction with several other local organisations, due to take place one evening in March next year. We anticipate that most or all of the role could be home-based.
Proposal for the event:
A recent survey showed 1/3 of people had noticed a lonely older person in their community and been concerned, and 40% did not feel confident that they knew how they could help.
Our proposal is to aim this event at community members who might have contact with these isolated people, people who are not currently linked in with services which could help them or refer them on. This might be delivery drivers, post office clerks, or hairdressers – people who may see these isolated people, but themselves be unaware of the situation or unsure what to do about it.
We would like to provide information or training for these “gateway” members of society, so they know how to respond and what they can do, and ideally we want to capture this learning to be able to pass it on to those unable to attend.
Volunteer role:
We need help in the organisation of the event, and primarily in advertising it - we have ideas for those we would like to target, and need some help in doing so; we need to target people outside our usual networks (e.g. Business forums, Chambers of Commerce, relevant people at big chain shops etc).
We will meet with the volunteer to have a chat about the project and the organisations involved, and to start to get a plan together. We can also send over planning documents we already have. We hope that the role can be quite self-directed, as SGDEN staff work part time, though we will be as available as we can as needed.
We can pay expenses for the volunteer to attend the event itself, if they are able to.
Please contact Sophie Wainwright on [email protected] with a little information about yourself, your skills and why you'd like to volunteer, and we will be in touch asap.
