The National Manuscripts Conservation Trust (NMCT), provides financial assistance to help with the cost of conserving manuscripts that are historically or educationally valuable.

The NMCT gives grants to support the conservation of important manuscripts and archives. With support from The National Archives we can also advise applicants on issues relating to preservation and conservation best practice.

The object of the charity is to advance the education of the public by the provision of financial assistance :

  • to record offices and libraries in the United Kingdom offering public access and not directly funded by the government including local authorities universities and specialised record repositories;
  • to owners of manuscripts and archives resident in the United Kingdom which are conditionally exempt from capital taxation or which are owned by a charitable trust subject to assurances regarding adequate public access to such manuscripts;
  • towards the cost of repair, binding and conservation including reprography of manuscripts which in the opinion of the trustees are of historic or educational value and towards the cost of first stage listing but not for capital cost or equipment.
