IT Solutions Apprentice (Hardware)

How youll make a difference:

 

Our IT department plays a crucial role in supporting and maintaining a huge number of IT systems. They also help council staff to resolve their IT problems so we can carry on with our working day.  These apprenticeships are based with the Service Desk team who are the first point of contact for all ICT enquiries.

 

As our IT Solutions apprentice (software), you’ll get to help support the successful development, implementation and maintenance of complete IT solutions such as new operating systems and software / systems deployed to the council equipment and have access to servers to provide remote support. You will also be interacting with wider ICT department.

 

As our IT Solutions apprentice (hardware), you’ll get to help support the successful development, implementation and maintenance of complete IT solutions such as new hardware deployed to the council including laptops, desktops, tablets and smart phones and have access to servers to provide remote support. You will also be interacting with the wider ICT department.

 

Both apprentices will be taught to apply a professional framework to gather and analyse requirements, information and troubleshooting to deliver an ICT service to 2,800 users who themselves provide front line support to the public.

 

We will allocate you a workplace mentor to give you guidance and support throughout your 17 month apprenticeship and completion of a Level 3 in IT Solutions (Software) or Level 3 in IT Solutions (Hardware).

 

What we need from you:

 

  • Ideally hold English and Maths at grade C or 4 and above, or equivalent, or be willing to work towards gaining Level 2 in English and Maths.
  • Good written and numeracy skills.
  • Good research and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent IT skills
  • Able to communicate well with others, in order to provide an excellent customer service.

Things we need you to know:

 

The salary for this apprenticeship is set at the current National Minimum Wage;

Hourly rate

£8.21 Aged 25+

£7.70 Aged 21-24

£6.15 Aged 18-20

£4.35 Under 18

 

As part of this training route you do need to undertake a basic skills assessment as part of the selection process. These will be emailed to you by the training provider, Firebrand, and be completed by the deadline set.

 

The apprenticeship training requires you to attend residential training on 3 occasions which will take place at Wyboston Lakes, Bedfordshire so you must be willing to travel to and from this location. We will cover your travel and accommodation costs so you will not be out of pocket!

 

The Software residential training looks like this:

 

  • CompTIA IT Fundamentals – 3 days (planned delivery month 3)
  • Microsoft MTA Software Development Fundamentals – 4 days (planned delivery month 8)
  • End Point Assessment Test Preparation – 3 days (planned delivery month 12)

 

The Hardware residential training looks like this:

  • CompTIA IT Fundamentals – 3 days (planned delivery month 3)
  • CompTIA Network+ – 5 days (planned delivery month 8)
  • EPA Test Prep – 3 days (planned delivery month 12)

 

When you aren’t taking part in residential training, the rest of your time will be spent with us learning on the job.  In addition to your workplace mentor, you will also be allocated an assessor by Firebrand, who will come to visit you at work to complete reviews. These reviews are simply to make sure you are on track and happy.

 

You’ll be completing a Level 3 IT Solutions (software) or Level 3 IT Solutions (Hardware) apprenticeship standard which will provide you with a highly transferable set of knowledge, skills and behaviours, which you gain by working for us.

 

This apprenticeship also requires you to complete an end point assessment which will see you demonstrate what you have learned as an apprentice and how it can be applied in any other organisation. This will be another chance for you to shine!

 

The end point assessment consists of a portfolio, project and interview. Sounds scary? Don’t worry, we and your assessor will give you plenty of support and encouragement to ensure you are prepared and confident to complete this stage. We also have plenty of apprentices here that can give you tips and help ease any nerves or concerns, because they have done it themselves!
