Description of the Volunteer Role:
Be a part of an amazing group of women supporting women.
Womankind is an established charity helping hundreds of women every year to improve their mental health and wellbeing. Our wonderful volunteers are the backbone of our organisation. We need you!
Whether you‘re looking for job experience, a sense of community, to learn or develop new skills, or just because you are passionate about helping other women…
… we currently have two great opportunities for you:
Our befrienders encourage and support isolated women to become more confident and independent, build relationships and get involved in their local community. The women we support may have faced difficulties such as childhood abuse, trauma, sexual and domestic abuse and will be experiencing mental ill health and social isolation.
What befrienders do – you will support women in Bristol and South Gloucestershire for 2-3 hours on a weekly or fortnightly basis for up to a year to provide companionship and enable women to set their own goals and make positive changes. You would start by getting to know each other, getting out and about. As the relationship develops you will support and empower her to make changes and develop her confidence in doing everyday things such as getting the bus, joining a class, finding new hobbies, volunteering, meeting new people and having some fun! You will also provide emotional support using listening skills so she has someone to talk to about the things she is struggling with.
Our Helpline volunteers offer confidential listening support (via telephone and webchat) to any woman on any issue, including domestic and sexual abuse and mental health issues. Volunteers commit to one 3-hour Helpline shift per week once they have completed our comprehensive training programme. You will also have weekly support from the service coordinator and monthly group supervision with your fellow volunteers.
What you will need – excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to listen to others, non-judgmental attitude, the ability to empathise with others, commitment, consistency, reliability and patience.
