In this blog, the Prison Reform Trust discuss the latest figures on mental health and learning disability in the justice system, and the continuing rise in incidents of self-harm and self-inflicted deaths in custody. 

Our overcrowded and overstretched prisons are struggling to meet the needs of the high numbers of people in their care with a mental health need or learning disability.

Peter Dawson, Director of the Prison Reform Trust, comments: “We hope all political parties will recommit to the vital task… to provide timely support for people with mental health needs and learning disabilities in contact with criminal justice services, including when appropriate, diversion into healthcare.”
