This course is about bringing together people who want to make a difference in their community. We’ll spend time together listening and learning from each other, as well as having inputs from the
tutor that will help understanding. We’ll also look at what we mean by community development and skills needed to make things happen in the community.
You may already be involved in community groups either as a paid worker or a volunteer and are looking to develop skills and strategies to enable the group to achieve its aims, as well as deal with the problems that all groups experience. Maybe you are looking to take part in some community
activity, in which case the course will provide you with a good understanding of communities and groups.
To give you an idea of what we will be doing, here is an outline of the topics we shall be covering:
How to build good relationships and improve communication
Understanding the importance of groups and how they work
What we mean by community development
Looking at what people and the community needs and how to respond
Forming a group and recruiting members
Running meetings
The legal side of running groups
Working in partnership with other groups and agencies
Fundraising
Looking at what we’ve learned and how we can use it
The course will be practical and we’ll be working in pairs, small groups and sometimes as a whole group. You do not need any particular experience or skills to join the course, so come along, bring a
friend if you wish and we’ll do our best to make the course as enjoyable as possible. In addition the course is an ideal introduction to the Level 3 Certificate in Community Development which Southern Brooks Community Partnership will be running in the Autumn of 2011.
Booking is essential as these courses are extremely popular. Bring a packed lunch!
